I need some advice. My sweet little baby has been not so sweet lately. He is whiny and cranky. And sometimes when I set him down he cries. This is weird because my baby almost never cries. He doesn't sleep anymore. Naps have been almost cut out completely. At night, he used to sleep 10-12 hours. Last night he woke up 5 times in 6 hours. And then decided he was ready for the day to start and wouldn't go back to sleep. He is drooling like crazy and bites/sucks on everything.
What does this sound like to you? Everyone I have talked to so far has said teething. And I agree, it does sound like that... but this has been going on for weeks now with no sign of improvement. SO MY QUESTION IS... How long did it take for your baby to cut teeth? Or if you don't think he is teething, what else could it be? What did you do to help your baby?
I am hoping that he is just teething and that all this will be over and done with soon. For the sake of my family, I sure hope so. 'Cause I turn into a mean, cranky person when I am running on no sleep.
Thanks for the advice!
:( I thoroughly dislike this... And I have no advice.. hah. I will be the one calling you for it!!!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like teething to me too but teething doesn't always mean that the teeth cut through. They have to move up the gums first and that can be incredibly painful. You may not be able to feel his teeth as his gums could be swollen. One thing you can do is get a piece of celery that is cold and give it to him to bite on to help cool off the inflamed gums. As for the setting him down and he cries, that could be the teeth but it could also just be a phase. All kids go through a period of separation anxiety. That could also be what is going on at night, however it sounds more like a combination of the two. Get some of the baby Ambisol for his gums that numb them at night. I don't like using it all the time as it can toughen the gums and make it harder for the teeth to come through. But at night, do your tylenol, Ambisol and have some ambient noise going like a fan, music or the radio. Anything that is constant for him and won't startle him awake. Teething sucks for all kids. Make sure he doesn't have a prolonged fever as sometimes all that drool can get into the ears and cause an ear infection (Zoe got one with every tooth she got.) Hang in there. If these suggestions don't help, let me know, I have more! Having two kids that teethed differently from each other makes you learn little tricks.
ReplyDeleteI two think that Braxton has begun the teething process, as most kids do when they're around six months old. One thing that drove me nuts about the teething process is that the teeth would come down like they were going to pop through the gums, then they'd go right back up... David was not a happy boy at that time. I agree with the post above.... Numb his gums, use tylenol for pain control. They have come out with all kinds of fun teething toys for little ones now, investing in some couldn't hurt. My kids have always gotten clingy when they're sick, or in pain, they just want to be close to their mommy, all you can do for that is love them! Also, have you started Braxton out on solids yet? David always liked to chew on those baby biscuits, they make a mess, but they kept him happy.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I asked if you'd started solids is because Daphanee got super cranky when she was ready for solids... As it turns out she just wanted something more than milk in her tummy, and after we started her on solids she was a happy baby again, she went longer between feedings, and slept better.
